Our veterinarians should see your new puppy or kitten for the first time either at 8 weeks old or as soon as you get him or her. After the initial appointment, we will need to see your new puppy or kitten every month until he or she reaches 6 months of age. These appointments are very important to make sure that your new pet is growing as he or she should and that there are no problems with health, growth, or development.
During your kitten or puppy’s appointment we will get weight, temperature, heart rate, and respiratory rate. We will also check ears, eyes, nose, mouth (link to dental care), and general physical health.
Kittens should be checked for FeLV/FIV before being vaccinated against these diseases. Puppies and kittens often have worms in their digestive tracts. An intestinal parasite screening (fecal sample) will be taken to check for worms and medication will be given orally if any are present.
Finally, your new pet will get started on his or her course of vaccines. This is a great time to talk to your veterinarian about parasite prevention, diet, and any other questions you may have.
